How to sing like Christine Daaé from The Phantom of the Opera

christine daae learn to sing legit soprano

Is Christine Daaé on your short list of dream roles?

For sopranos everywhere, this role may be the dreamiest of dream roles! And no wonder, she gets to sing stunning music, wear spectacular costumes, and lead one of the biggest Broadway musicals of all time.

I had the extreme pleasure of working as the associate vocal coach on the Broadway and International Touring productions of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, so I have an idea about the vocal gymnastics this role requires!

It may be surprising to hear, but some of the key elements for a spectacular 'Christine' sound include: mixing chest voice and head voice (no breathy soprano here, friends!), and opting for brighter vowels (dark and hooty is not in this character's job description)!

The exercises in this quick video can help you find those sensations, and they're ideal for working on your legit soprano style for a ton of other great shows as well.

Exercise #1: MUM 1.5 Octave with Sustain

Much more helpful than an open "AH" vowel, this "UH" vowel and feeling can help you maintain better balance as you ascend through your voice. Keep it bright, no hooty or dark "UH" vowels here!

Exercise #2: Messa Di Voce

Dynamic range is crucial for this role! Practice this single note sustain exercise on a variety of vowels. The ultimate goal is to be able to maintain a balanced and even vibrato as you increase and decrease your volume.
