Industry Insights: June
πComedy GOLD: Industry Guest Masterclass with Broadway's John Bolton
This month, our members got a front-row education in comedic timing, audition resilience, and how to bring their unique brand of funny into the room with confidence and clarity—straight from Broadway vet John Bolton (A Christmas Story, Spamalot, Anastasia, Dames at Sea).
Whether he was breaking down flop recovery tactics...
π¬ "Acknowledge the flop but keep it from becoming a failure...Relieve yourself of that weight by doing what you need to prepare."
... or helping singers find their personal spin on classic material, John served both wisdom and one-liners in this dynamic, laugh-filled masterclass.
π¬ “How do you bring YOUR funny to something that is already funny from someone else's shoes?”
That’s the question that launched it all, and what followed was a masterclass in finding your comedic truth, not just replicating someone else’s.
Top Takeaways from John Bolton’s Comedy Class
- Let the Joke Land—Don’t Sell It
Over-explaining or “announcing” the joke kills its magic. Trust the writing, trust your instincts, and give the audience space to meet you halfway. - Commit, Even When It Feels Off-the-Wall
The absurd, the unexpected, the weird—it only works if you go all in. Comedy requires boldness and belief. - Your Book Should Feel Alive
Material feeling stale? Time for a refresh. Reworking old songs (or rotating in new ones) keeps your auditions playful and authentic. - Be PREPARED
Know your material, work on your material, and be on time. Do what you need to do to show up prepared and professional.
π¬ “If you do your best, once in a while it’s YOUR TURN to get the job.”

β Managing different audience reactions

πOH MY GOD YOU GUYS: June's Spotlight Masterclass took on Legally Blonde
This month, we pulled back the sparkly curtain on one of the most deceptively smart, physically demanding, and vocally nuanced shows in the musical theatre canon: Legally Blonde.
From Elle’s arc to Brooke’s jump-rope stamina to casting Paulette, we explored everything actors need to know to bring heart and strategy to their Legally Blonde auditions (not just high notes).
1οΈβ£ Elle's Arc = Shakespearean Stakes in a Pop Package
Elle’s journey is classic hero’s journey material: she begins self-assured, gets crushed by rejection, doubts herself, and ultimately discovers her worth on her own terms. It’s not about Warner! It’s about her.
Try this: In "So Much Better", every line has to build: vocally, emotionally, and physically. If you sprint too fast, you miss the discovery. This song isn't just "cute". It's strategy. Growth. Transformation.
2οΈβ£ Know the Relationships Cold
From Elle & Warner to Elle & Emmett, this show thrives on chemistry. Do the pre-work to understand character relationships as deeply as vocal technique.
Try this: Show relational awareness, not just vocal ability. Show connection!
Hot Topics Covered in Class
β Multiple Elle's emerged: Confidence doesn't have one look, one sound, or one shade of pink!
β Paulette needs updating: Some lines haven't aged well. Smart actors find the soul of the humor, not the outdated reference.
β Brooke's choreography = legit cardio test. Want the role? Get your stamina up!
Spotlight Masterclasses are exclusive to our Studio members.
π Pop/Rock Masterclass
Led by Cynthia Kortman Westphal, this month’s Pop/Rock Masterclass was all about authenticity, nuance, and breaking free from telltale "musical theatre singer" giveaways. Singers leaned into storytelling while lightening vocal production, deepening connection, and discovering just how many colors are available to them in their vocal palette.
π¬ β "I don't know how to get all three things: a good pop song, a fun story or compelling performance, and range." -Helen, BVC Member
And THAT is exactly why we offer this class!
1οΈβ£ Emotional Power Comes from Less, Not More
Pop/rock songs can often start much quieter and breathier than you think! It allows more of an emotional and musical journey.
Try this: Sing the beginning of your song with breathiness and softer dynamics. Notice how that changes the emotional context—and reveals new vulnerability or intimacy.
2οΈβ£ MT Habits? Time to Unlearn (when you're singing pop!)
Holding every note to the very end and using one sound the whole way through? That’s theatre. But in pop/rock, you choose how each phrase ends and how much vocal texture you show.
Try this: Replace “finish this note” with “make this an event.” Explore snatches, vibrato, and intentional cutoffs. (Hair down, not hair dooooown.)
3οΈβ£ Technique Serves Story
Find vocal freedom by releasing tension and staying grounded in the emotional moment. (Less shouting, more ‘crying’!) The result? Dynamic, heartfelt storytelling that feels less vocally effortful.
Try this: Semi-occluded warmups are your best friend—my favorites are using a straw or a “blowfish” mouth shape. Then, take it a step further: sing your melody lines using your straw or blowfish before transitioning to full voice! It’s a game-changer for vocal ease.
Coming Up in July!
πJuly Industry Guest: (Sondheim focused)
Direct from the podium of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends—which played its final performance Sunday, June 29, 2025—we’re welcoming the show’s Music Director & Conductor, Annbritt duChateau, for an exclusive SONDHEIM-focused class!
With over 20 major Broadway credits—including Aladdin, Frozen, Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, Missβ―Saigon, Into the Woods, and Stephen Sondheim’s Company—she’s THE rare musical director who brings A-list artistry and top-tier education into one room.
Why you don’t want to miss this:
Annbritt spent a decade working side-by-side with Sondheim and maestro Paul Gemignani, played piano for the star-studded Company concert with the New York Philharmonic, and led Broadway’s all-Sondheim celebration eight times a week.
If you've ever wondered what goes on behind the curtains—how musical directors guide tempo, character, and expression—this is your front-row, insider access.
Seats to this class will disappear faster than the "Worst Pies in London".
(seriously, when else do you get to watch live coaching with the person who just closed Sondheim's latest project?)
