Drowning in Kids' Clothes, SOS!
Written By: Chelsea
I was ankle deep in children's clothes when I realized...
I had wayyyy underestimated how big this project was!
Have you ever started in on a project to realize... Ooooh, THIS is why I've been avoiding it for so long?
Ever felt overwhelmed/unprepared/anxious just thinking about trying to do it?
Yeah, that's how I've been feeling about sorting my two kids' clothes and closets.
This is a privileged suburban mom thing to talk about, I know. So if you're rolling your eyes, I get it! And, stick with me! You might relate more than you think.
I've got two beautiful little girls (little! Almost three and a baby who is 8 months), and WOW do these little girls move through clothes at a rapid pace.
My 8-month-old baby seems to move up a size every month??? This morning I put her in a 12 month onesie and I was like ๐
And my almost-three-year-old has been wearing a size 4T since the spring of this year ๐
We're going through clothes, and fast! And with that comes....
The piles.
I know you know, you have them too.
The pile by the front door of stuff you need to return. The pile of clean laundry at the foot of your bed, wanting desperately to be gingerly put away in its cozy drawers and closet spaces. The pile of dirty dishes in/beside the sink (there's two kinds of people in the world, IN the sink people, and BESIDE the sink people. And they marry each other).
I've been wading through piles of little girl clothes for months now and I knew it was a job that required serious time and energy to devote to it. I needed a PLAN!
Do you have piles/projects in your life weighing you down?
I'm getting more metaphorical than the dishes in/beside the sink now, ok?
Maybe those looming "actor" projects are:
- Clearing out and revamping your audition book. Have you even touched that thing since college?!?
- Updating your resume. And printing it. And picking up the prints. And stapling them to headshots.
- Creating or updating your website. You gotta do it!
- Editing together a vocal reel for said website and your Actor's Access profile. Might include filming stuff for it too...
- Updating your audition tracker spreadsheet, or networking notes spreadsheet (Highly recommend! And you can get our templates (and so many actor resources) when you get a BVC Masterclass subscription.
If any of this sounds familiar (and mildly triggering), you also need time, energy, and a PLAN!
Here's my advice for tackling the metaphorical actor piles in your life:
- Set aside time to do it. This is step one for a reason, it's the MOST important! Pick a date(s), block off time on your calendar, tell people you're not available, set your phone to do-not-disturb, and hunker down.
- Gather the necessary tools. For me and my kids' clothes, it's neon green scrap paper and a sharpie as I label clothes grouped by size and organize in clear bins we've had around the house. It's also Diet Coke and the soundtrack to & Juliet on a bluetooth speaker. If you're revamping your audition book, that might mean setting up shop at the local Staples Office Supply to print fresh copies of sheet music, cutting and taping audition cuts together, and marking them up with those pretty Paper Mate felt-tip pens you like. (This is not a sponsored post, but someone please sponsor me with office supplies).
- Ask for help/get a buddy. Not all projects are meant to be completed solo! Whether it's a friend who can simultaneously work on the same task as you and keep you accountable, or a coach who can advise on repertoire choice or website edits, you'll need support to tackle these things!
If you're looking for some resources to tackle some of the looming actor "piles" in your life, we're here for you. That's why Cynthia and I have created a whole array of services here at Broadway Vocal Coach, so you have the help and tools you need to take your next step.
