4 Levels of Straw Phonation

learn to sing

Four Levels of straw phonation to practice:

  1. Vocalize through a wide straw. The wider the straw the less back pressure you’ll feel. Back pressure is that nice, massage feeling you get as the air recirculates while doing straw work!
  2. A wide straw blowing bubbles in a cup of water. The water provides gentle resistance and more back pressure. If you’re feeling particularly tired or gunky, more back pressure might feel better for your voice.
  3. Skinny, singing straws! I like these from @singingstraw . More straws, more airflow.
  4. A single, skinny straw! Smallest diameter, most back pressure!
